Expecting the supernatural
Paul the Apostle is one of my heros. The guy is tough and smart. He survived a shipwreck and then was promtply bitten by a poison snake which he shook off into the fire. He clearly believed in God’s power to provide, protect, and to do the supernatural. When he faced seemingly insurmountable circumstances, he just shook them off. One might expect Paul to be a bit reckless and immune to concern regarding circumstances considering his way of life. Bue he had an appreciation for reality and for the very real risks his followers were facing and he gave advice that was very practical and which was grounded in reality.
Many in the church today mistakenly assume that their refusal to acknowledge circumstantances, reality and systemic risk is tantamount to faith. But American believers may be shaped more by culture and experience than they realize. We have lived in times of cheap oil, a strong currency, a civil society, and constantly growing food output. The problem is that our future may more closely resemble the experience of the (grain shortage) corinthians and Paul’s sober minded advice may be more useful than our groundless optimism. What I Know For Sure…
Jesus, during his earthly ministry, lived during a time when evil men were ruling over God’s people. He had knowledge of what was to come and how it would affect him adversely personally.
Matthew 26:
37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”
He knew what awaited him, but because his “tuner” was set to the voice of his Father, he did not use his own logic or reasoning powers to escape suffering and death. He wrestled with his foreknowledge and he prayed to the point of tears of blood. But ultimately he simply chose to solider on towards his future, whether it was one he welcomed (“how I have longed to gather you as a mother hen”) or if it was one he dreaded (“take this cup from me”).
Jesus had learned two important rules that guided his activities and his focus:
